In this article, we explore everything you need to know about cobblestones, including their history, benefits, installation and how to maintain them.
History of Cobblestones
The history of cobblestones dates back to ancient times when they were used to pave roads and walkways. “cobblestone” comes from the Old English word “cob,” which means a rounded lump or mass. The stones were initially picked up from riverbeds and were chosen for their durability and resistance to wear and tear.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, cobblestones became widely used in Europe and America for paving roads and walkways. They were used extensively in London, Paris, and New York City. Today, cobblestones are still a popular choice for creating stunning driveways, walkways, and patios.
Creative Stone has created many show-stopping projects throughout Southern Africa using our simulated stone cobblestones.
Benefits of Using Cobblestones
Creative Stone’s Cobblestone paver ranges were designed with strength and beauty in mind and offer numerous benefits, including:
Durability: Cobblestones are incredibly durable and can withstand foot traffic, vehicle traffic, and all types of weather conditions.
Aesthetic Appeal: Cobblestones have a unique look and are available in various styles, sizes, textures and colours to suit a wide range of architectural styles and designs. From rustic to contemporary you’re sure to find that perfect match for your project.
Easy Installation: Cobblestones are relatively easy to install as they are typically laid on a river sand base and grouted thereafter. Technical laying specs for all cobblestone are available for download on our website should you wish to attempt a little DIY.
How to Maintain Cobblestones
Maintaining cobblestones is relatively easy, and they can last for many years with proper care. Here are some tips for keeping your Creative Stone cobblestones looking brand new:
Seal Your Pavers: Paver sealant is an important maintenance tool to keep them looking as beautiful as the day they were installed. Creative Stone recommend the sealing of all our products in order to protect them and make maintaining them all that much easier.
Regular Cleaning: Regularly cleaning of paved surfaces limits the build-up of potential ingrained dirt and staining. We recommend the use of mild detergent with degreasing properties and soft bristle brushes/brooms for the cleaning of our products.
